It’s All About Basic…………

I have been teaching Modern Arnis in Hong Kong for almost two years. It is a form of Martial Arts originated from the Philippines . A form of martial arts that uses two pieces of a stick of about 28 inches long. The techniques and the movements with the stick are practically adaptable with the bare hands or with Bolo and knife, they are both applicable.

For our fellow Filipinos and other national who have the passion to learn the Arts, we started the lesson by introducing the 12 Basic strikes on the vital points of the body of the opponent followed by the Basic Blockings and then the Basic Disarming. Once the basics have been familiarized and learned, they are ready to adopt different variations of strikes, blocking applications and disarming techniques. As they go on and equipped with the basic knowledge, they are ready to face the next level of learning the advance applications and technique of the Art. Along the way without notice and direct instructions, they also start learning and developing Respect, Discipline, Courage, Self control, Sportsmanship and Loyalty to the Art. And as they go on further with their creativity they can develop another style and another technique based on their imagination.

Learning Filipino martial arts is just like learning other skills, it is all begin with the basics, just like in life, it exactly begin with the Basic. When we were kids we go to primary schools to learn basic education, then to secondary school to enrich our basic knowledge from primary school learnings, and from that knowledge we starting to shape up our dreams, identify and develop our skills and pursue further learning, but along the way without also noticing that we are also learning a lot of things outside our teacher’s teachings. We learn to Love which develop from companionship, we learn friendship thru sharing, we learn justice from being fair to everyone and we are learning a lot of things from our mistakes and everything started with the basics…..So, it’s all about basic!

Cooloo: I like the improvisation elements in certain styles of music(jazz sure is one). During combat in real life, we can find impro in its pure form.
